Seminar Report: 14th International Trends Study Session -The Latest Trends in France’s Startup Policies and Ecosystem-

On April 23, the Japan Association of New Economy (JANE) held the 14th International Trends Study Session.

We welcomed Mr. Christophe Grignon from the Economic Dept. of the French Embassy in Japan as a speaker, who provided an overview of the history of “French Tech” startup policy and the current state of its ecosystem, drawing comparisons with Japan.

In the presentation, Mr. Grignon explained how France grew to become the EU’s largest startup market and highlighted that this success stemmed from a brand strategy internationally oriented from the outset, which raised the profile of French startups both domestically and internationally. He also noted that the government’s leadership in coordinating startup participation in international events fostered a public-private partnership that enhanced France’s international presence, ultimately attracting foreign investors. Furthermore, the policy of fostering an environment that tolerates failure and encourages risk-taking offered valuable insights for Japan.

During the Q&A session, there was an active discussion on topics such as the status and level of interest in mutual market entry between Japanese and French startups, the challenges Japanese startups face when expanding overseas, and the policies that have contributed to the development of local ecosystems—a defining feature of the French startup ecosystem.
