【Public Consultation】We submitted our views on the Cabinet Office’s draft “Basic Approach for the 6th Basic Plan for Gender Equality.”

On September 12, 2025, the Japan Association of New Economy (JANE) submitted its opinion on the “Basic Approach for Formulating the Sixth Basic Plan for Gender Equality (Draft)” conducted by the Cabinet Office.

【Summary of Our Opinion】
Field 5 – Advancing Gender Equality in Light of Technological Progress and Expanded Utilization
4.  Promoting Female Students’ Choice of STEM Fields and Cultivating STEM Talent
• While not limited to this item, quantitative targets should be set for the proportion of women advancing to universities and technical colleges, ensuring the PDCA cycle is rigorously implemented to execute effective countermeasures.

• Regarding promoting female students’ selection of STEM fields and cultivating STEM talent, it is recommended to consider creating events and learning opportunities focused on enhancing the quality of experiences that spark interest in science and technology, such as increasing opportunities for hands-on learning experiences utilizing technologies like AI.

• It is recommended to promote the establishment and expansion of specialized high school departments aligned with societal needs, such as AI/IT professionals, creative talent, and semiconductor specialists. Simultaneously, it is recommended to review measures to increase the number of science and engineering students by expanding enrollment quotas in university departments and other institutions.
