A Statement at the Sixth Public-Private Partnership Forum on increasing Domestic Investment, Cabinet Secretariat

JANE Representative Director Mickey Mikitani attended the Sixth Public-Private Partnership Forum on increasing Domestic Investment, hosted by the Government of Japan on January 27, 2025, and stated his views on issues related to the expansion of domestic investment, including tax measures and labor shortages that constrain domestic investment, as well as revitalization of local economies through the Furusato Nozei (hometown tax donation) program.
The key points of his remarks are as follows:

• The government should aim for “economic growth through tax reduction” to prevent the outflow of people and investment from Japan.
• The government should engage in serious discussions on the active acceptance of immigrants in consideration of the ongoing population decline and aging society.
• Regulatory and institutional frameworks should be designed based on objective data. This includes implementation of ride-sharing models that align with global best practices, rather than being limited by current Japanese interpretations, and should also inform evidence-based strategies for addressing drug abuse issues.
• Revitalizing local economies through the Furusato Nozei program is essential, and from a local marketing perspective, the ban on awarding points should be lifted.
